Simon was born to the late Willie Lewis and Ethel Lumpkin on January 28, 1958, in Midway, Georgia. He departed this life on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at Washington Hospital Center.
He graduated from Bradwell Institute and joined the United States Army in 1976, He was presented with several awards while serving in the military where he served 8 years and was honorably discharged in 1984 at Fort Belvoir, VA. He continued to live in the Washington, DC metropolitan area working for several private sector employers until his untimely death.
Simon enjoyed spending time with his wife Shelah and his family, as well as making home-made ice cream and bread pudding, traveling, watching football (especially the Cowboys), mechanical work and helping those in his community.
Simon was friendly and outgoing but had a calm, quiet demeanor. He never complained, instead finding the positive in everyday life. He always made you feel special and made you feel like you could accomplish anything to which you set your mind. He was a father figure to many in the family and community.
Simon is preceded in death by his parents; two of his beloved sisters, Lillian Ann Harden-Bell and Virginia Phillips of Midway, Georgia; brother Charles Lumpkin Sr. of Midway, GA. Sister in-law Ella Roberson (deceased) Clinton, Md and brother in-law Sim B. Howze III - Brother-in-law (deceased) Laredo, WV, stepdaughter Rache Hale
He is survived by his wife, Shelah; his sons, Simon Lumpkin Jr., Simon J. Lumpkin (Markeysa), and Eric Lumpkin; his daughters Gloria Nichols (Terrell), Chenicka Lumpkin, Shanta Amedodji(Yao), Sherita Garris, and step-son, James Wingfield.
His 23 grandchildren and 7 great- grandchildren.
The family invites all to the Homegoing Celebration for Simon on April 12, 2023, at Mt. Ennon Baptist Church, 9832 Piscataway Road, Clinton, Maryland 20735. Viewing from 11:00 with services immediately following at noon.
Repast will be held immediately after the service at, American Legion Clinton Post 259 9122 Piscataway Road Clinton, MD 20735
The family invites all to the final viewing for Simon on April 14, 2023, at Dorchester Funeral Home 7842 East Oglethorpe Hwy, Midway, GA 31320 from 11 -noon.
The Committal Service will be at the Simmons Cemetery, immediately following the viewing. Bishop Tevin Roberts to officiate.
