Mr. Daniel Sylvester Obituary

Daniel Thomas Sylvester was born in Dawson, Georgia to Eldora Carter Sylvester and the late Marion Sylvester. He was the oldest of 6 children. “Dan” was educated in the Terrell County School System and graduated from Terrell County High School where he was a standout athlete who excelled in football, baseball, and basketball. Dan was offered a scholarship to play football at Albany State University, but decided to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Army.

Prior to joining the military, Dan married the late Iammie Jackson Sylvester in 1975. Of this union, one child was born, Tanisha LaVonne Sylvester (Frazier). He and Iammie were neighborhood sweethearts and were married for 32 years until Iammie departed this life in 2007.

Dan proudly served in the Army for 20 years. He spent the early years of his military career in the Airborne division. In later years he would serve as an instructor, drill sergeant, and even served on the United States Army boxing team. He enjoyed teaching and served as an instructor until he retired in 1993. After retiring from the military, he started a career with the Georgia Department of Corrections where he served for 8 years.  He was always a hard worker and traveled the world in numerous assignments throughout his career. He later worked with Chatham County Sheriff’s Department for 10 years where he also retired. During his time at the Chatham County Detention Center he met and would later marry Deborah James. In addition to serving his country and his community Dan also served his church through song with the Men of Integrity choir.

Dan loved his family and would do all he could to help where needed. He was the wise voice of reason and patriarch of the family. He was a loving grandfather who enjoyed seeing “his babies” Sanaya and Grant doing well in their endeavors and was so proud of them. He looked forward to going to their games and hearing the many stories that life was handing them.  He always wanted his siblings, nieces, nephews and other family members to do well.

On Monday February 19, 2024, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, uncle, nephew, and friend departed his earthly life for eternity at home. As a family, we are confident knowing that his living was not in vain. He touched the lives of many and will truly be missed by all that knew him. He is preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Milner, brothers, Steve Sylvester, and Edward Sylvester.

Dan leaves to mourn his cherished memories his wife of 13 years, Deborah Sylvester of Midway Ga.; a daughter, Tanisha Frazier (Ervin) of Hinesville Ga; his mother, Eldora Carter Sylvester of Dawson Ga.; two grandchildren; Sanaya Frazier and Grant Frazier of Hinesville Ga.; two brothers, Andrew Sylvester; and Ernest Sylvester of Dawson Ga.; an aunt, Mary McGhee of Dawson Ga,; and an uncle Raymond Carter (Mae Lizzie) of Hinesville Ga.; nieces/daughters McKeda Jones and Lasasha Barnes of Albany Ga.; and a host of nieces, nephews, stepchildren, grandchildren, cousins, and friends.

Final and most sacred arrangements are entrusted to the professional care of The Dorchester Funeral Home, 7842 E. Oglethorpe Hwy, Midway, GA.
