Joseph Quarterman, Sr. was born July 16, 1955 in Hinesville, Georgia to the late Deacon Mark Quarterman II and Lena Mae Cooper Quarterman. He entered into eternal rest on September 1, 2023. He was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Ellie Quarterman, and one sister, Esther Leonard.
Joseph was a kind and loving person. At an early age, he attended New Church of Christ in Midway, Georgia along with his loving parents.
He attended the public schools of Liberty County, Georgia, graduating from Bradwell Institute in 1973.
Joseph joined the United States Army in 1974 serving as an Air Missile Defense Crew Member stationed in Germany. After one tour, he received an honorable discharge. He then went on to work at Winn Army Community Hospital as a System Manager for Food Service for 33 years. During that period, he also served in the United States Army National Guard from 1978 through 2002 as a Culinary Specialist. He was ordered to active duty November 1990 to May 1991 and deployed to Saudi Arabia in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. He received several distinguished awards: National Defense Medal, Army Commendation Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal.
Joseph was joined in holy matrimony to the former Carrie Strodder in September 1980. To this union, three children were born.
Joseph leaves to cherish his loving memories, his children, Monica (Marvin) Hill of Midway, Georgia, Shameka Quarterman of Hampton, Georgia, Joseph Quarterman, Jr. of Yorktown, Virginia and Tikyra Sapp of Hinesville, Georgia; his former wife, Carrie Quarterman of Midway, Georgia; four grandchildren, Nia, Isaiah and Ariel Quarterman of Queidersbach, Germany; Madison Hill of Midway, Georgia; four brothers, Deacon Mark Quarterman III of Midway, Georgia, Terry (Joanna) Quarterman of Riceboro, Georgia, Donnell Quarterman of Midway, Georgia and Michael Quarterman of Hinesville, Georgia; one sister, Birdie Mae Brown of Riceboro, Georgia; two sisters-in-law, Laverma Quarterman of Midway, Georgia and Carolyn Quarterman of Brooklyn, New York. He will be greatly missed by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
