Honorable Virgil Jones Obituary

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered. “No, in all things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus, our Lord.”

Romans 8:35-39 NIV

Virgil Marcus Jones, Sr., 60, transitioned peacefully on February 26, 2024 at Candler Hospital, Savannah, GA. He was born to the parentage of the late Peace Officer Maxie R. Jones, Jr. and
Margaret Baker Jones of the Freedman Grove Community. He was born their tenth child. He was educated in the Liberty County School System graduating from Bradwell Institute in 1982. There, he was a proud member of the varsity basketball team. He excelled academically and his favorite subject was Math. After graduating high school, he attended Morris Brown College and Georgia State University.

Virgil made Jesus his first choice at a very early age, when he joined the St. James AME Church
of the Freedman Grove Community. He served as Trustee, the Finance Steward, the Youth Advisor, a member of the Gospel Choir, and Male Choir. He also served as President of the Liberty County AME Choir Union. His leadership was vital in his church. His grandmother, the late Rosa E. Jones, made him accept the position of assistant superintendent at the age of thirteen. That position would keep him engaged and mature him for his leadership role(s) later in life. He walked in his God-given gift of leadership.

In his younger years, Virgil was employed at Home Depot, Haverty’s and Sears. He quickly advanced through the ranks to become one of the youngest members of the upper management team. Virgil spent seven years as a Clerk at the Liberty County Tax Commissioners Office. It was a position that he loved as it enabled him to interact with and assist the citizens of Liberty County. With God’s guidance and direction, Virgil decided to step out on faith and seek the position of Tax Commissioner. His trust and faith in God was proven when he became the first African American male to hold the position of Liberty County Tax Commissioner.

In January 2005, Virgil began his journey of service to the people of Liberty County, with integrity and compassion for all he encountered. His role as Tax Commissioner also revealed a servant’s heart because there were no issues, concerns or circumstances too large or small that he would not lend his assistance. Virgil had an open-door policy, whether it was to discuss business or simply to pop in and say hello. He truly loved his job and the people he served.

In 1997, he was married to the former Felicia Evette Jemison. Their union was blessed with two
remarkable children: Virgil Marcus II and Lyndsay Maria. His proudest moments were the birth of his children. Virgil held many titles in his life, but his favorite role was that of a father. He loved spending time with his wife and children. He was always there for them, whether he was teaching Marcus how to play tennis or helping Lyndsay learn to drive. Virgil’s quiet and gentle spirit is evident in two of his greatest accomplishments, his children.

Virgil is predeceased by his parents: Maxie R. and Margaret Baker Jones; six siblings: Randolph,
Beverly, Rosemary, Carlotta, Maxie lll and Neal; his Maternal Grandparents: Ulysses and Mary G. Baker; Paternal Grandparents: Maxie, Sr. and Rosa E. Jones.
