Hazel Strodder - Brockington was born December 2, 1954 in Midway, Georgia. She was born to the late James Henry Sr. and Willie Mae Strodder. She entered into eternal rest on Friday, October 13, 2023 at St. Joseph Hospital in Savannah, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Deacon James Brockington and two sisters, Beulah Mae Fabian and Annie Lee Strodder.
Hazel attended the public schools of Liberty County, Georgia, graduating from Bradwell Institute in 1973. Hazel relocated to Brooklyn, New York. There she received a Bachelor degree in Business Administration. She was employed by the New York City Department of Sanitation as a Budget Analyst and worked there for 25 years. She became a member of the Historic Canaan Baptist Church in Harlem, New York under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Wyatt Tee Walker. There she was ordained to be a Deacon.
Hazel was a kind and loving person. She had a love for cooking and enjoyed serving and assisting the elderly. Upon retiring, Hazel relocated back to Georgia. She became a member of Connor’s Temple Baptist Church. There she worked faithfully on different committees. She served as the Vice President of the Mission Ministry, First District of the General Missionary Baptist Convention of GA, Inc Coordinator- Women’s Auxiliary Annual Tea, and Deaconess Ministry member.
Hazel leaves behind to cherish her loving memories, her son Wendell (Aretha) Covington, of Hinesville, GA; five grandchildren, Taejah Bacon of Hinesville, Georgia, Alayjah Bacon of Columbia, Georgia, Taevon Paulk of Hinesville, Georgia, Taylor Roberts of Hinesville, Georgia, and Tyler Roberts of Hinesville, Georgia; six sisters, Patricia Strodder of Midway, Georgia, Rose Ferdinand of Midway, Georgia, Renee (Carl) Simmons of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Carrie Quarterman of Midway, Georgia, Helen Sheppard of Richmond Hill, Georgia and Renee Holmes of Hinesville, Georgia; seven brothers, James Strodder Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia, John (Lynne) Strodder of Providence, Rhode Island, Melvin (Cheryl) Strodder of Richmond, Virginia, Jimmie (Beth) Strodder of Midway, Georgia, Alden Strodder of Atlanta, Georgia, Michael (Bridget) Strodder of Mattapan, Massachusetts, and Frank Worlds of Bronx, New York; one god daughter, Natalie Strodder of Midway, Georgia; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Brockington of Johns Island, South Carolina; one brother-in-law, Howard (Victoria) Brockington of Charleston, South, Carolina; one special aunt, Phyllis Johnson of Riviera Beach, Florida; three uncles, Prophet Otis (Rebecca) McIver of Midway, Georgia, Willie Gus McIver of Midway, Georgia, and Harry (Betty) McIver of Brooklyn, New York; a loving and devoted neighbor, Bernice Bacon of Midway, Georgia; a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
She will be greatly missed by all…Sleep on mom and take your rest. We love you but God loves you best. He knows your name and now has you in his hands.
