Chester Leroy Byrd Sr., “Byrd” was born Aug 19, 1957 in Winchester, VA. He was the son of the late Gaylord Caison and Richard Diggs. On September 16, 2021, Byrd was called home to be with the Lord while surrounded by his wife and son at Memorial Hospital in Savannah, GA.
On July 19, 1979, Byrd married his high school sweetheart, Sabrina Corum. Together they had one son, Chester Byrd Jr.
Byrd Enlisted in the U.S. Army November 28, 1977. He served as a Calvary Scout, acting as the eyes and ears to the commander during battles. Byrd engaged enemies in the field and served his country proudly during the Gulf War. Byrd retired from active duty November 30, 1997 as a Sergeant First Class.
Chester loved to golf, fish, watch The Andy Griffith show and Westerns. He wore his Gulf War Veteran hat wherever he went. Being around his grandchildren and taking a long car ride with his wife always brightened his day. Byrd was country to his core and he wore it proudly. He was a musician at heart and loved listening to Earth, Wind & Fire, Maze, Teddy Pendergrass and Stephanie Mills. Whenever his body permitted, Byrd would play his bass guitar and sing his old band songs. He was also an active member in the St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church until his health declined.
Byrd was preceded in death by one sister, Cindy King. To cherish his memory, he leaves his devoted wife Sabrina, son Chester Jr. and two granddaughters: Sanai and Kelsie. He also leaves behind sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews and a legion of friends that he adored and loved.
