Retired Command Sergeant Major Tony DeMarco Bridgewater peacefully departed this life on May 13, 2026, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of leadership, service, discipline, and devotion to family and country. He was 70 years old.
Tony was born on January 14, 1956, in Vero Beach, FL; where he was raised in Wabasso, FL and matriculated through the Indian River County school system. During his youth, he developed a love for athletics and teamwork, proudly playing football while attending Vero Beach High School. He graduated with the Class of 1974 and immediately enlisted in the United States Army, beginning what would become a distinguished military career spanning more than three decades; both internationally and domestic.
Tony attended Basic Training at Fort Knox and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Belvoir. He rose through the ranks to achieve the prestigious position of Command Sergeant Major—one of the highest enlisted ranks in the United States Army.
Throughout his remarkable military career, Command Sergeant Major Bridgewater served in numerous leadership assignments across the United States, Europe, and Asia. His distinguished assignments included service at Fort Carson, Schweinfurt and Augsburg, Germany, Homestead Air Force Base, Fort Sill, Baumholder, Germany, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Fort Bliss, Camp Hovey, Korea, and Fort Stewart. He served honorably in numerous capacities including squad leader, platoon sergeant, first sergeant, senior drill sergeant, senior instructor, deputy commandant, and Command Sergeant Major for multiple battalions and support commands.
Command Sergeant Major Bridgewater also served honorably in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, demonstrating courage, professionalism, and unwavering dedication during times of conflict and global service.
Tony believed deeply in education, his commitment led him to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Liberal Arts from Regents College, an Associate degree in Liberal Arts from Harold Washington College, and a dual Masters degree in Political Science from Webster University.
Throughout his decorated military career, Command Sergeant Major Bridgewater earned numerous awards and honors in recognition of his exceptional service and leadership. Hisdecorations included the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Army Service Ribbon, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Drill Sergeant Badge, Expert Rifle Badge, Master Instructor Badge, and many additional commendations earned throughout his years of faithful service. He was also a proud member of the Sergeant Morales Club.
While Tony's military accomplishments were extraordinary, those who knew and loved him will remember him most for the man he was beyond the uniform. He carried himself with quiet dignity, wisdom, strength, and compassion. He was known for his sharp style, love of fast cars, disciplined daily walks, and unwavering consistency in showing up for the people he loved. He embraced the community of Hinesville, GA as his home away from home. He developed a deep love for the city of Hinesville and the residents who often called him "Sarge". His calm spirit and steady presence brought comfort, guidance, and encouragement to countless family members, friends, fellow Soldiers, and veterans.
Above all, Tony cherished his family. His love was steadfast, dependable, and deeply felt by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gladstone Bridgewater; his mother, Dasie Bridgewater; and his brother, Lee Arthur Godwin.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted children, Samantha Bridgewater-Phillips (Dean), Tony Bridgewater Jr. and Alyssa Bridgewater; his beloved grandchildren Nyjheal Bridgewater, Samai'a Phillips, Symian Phillips, Szahri'a Phillips and Sarahn Phillips; his beloved sisters, Verna Wright (William, deceased), Carolyn Hodges (Willie) and Rebecca Williams; his cherished nieces and nephews, Lee Arthur James, Raquel Wright, Kimberly Smith (Maurice), Nichelle Rains (Timothy), La'Angela Littles (Johnny), Teresa Reed, Erecka Gaskin (Timothy), Temekia Spencer, Tarrence Wesley, and Elizabeth McNeal; and his very special friends, Dana King (Chelle), Linda Flora, John, Gay, Cassie and the entire Happy Acres Staff.
He also leaves behind countless great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family members, lifelong friends, fellow Soldiers, and all whose lives were forever enriched by his presence.
Tony's life was a true testament to being a believer of Christ. He not only believed in reading the Word of God, but also in living it daily — allowing his life to be a reflection and walking testimony of God's grace, truth and love for people. Though our hearts are heavy with sorrow, we find comfort in knowing that Tony lived a life of purpose, sacrifice, honor, and unwavering service. His legacy will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him.
