Murray Hicks
Iii
September 18, 1952 – March 17, 2026
Murray Hicks III was born Sept. 18, 1952 in Leesville, LA to the late Murray Hicks Jr.
and Iva Conerly Hicks. He was the brother to Peggy Hicks Johnson and Russell
Coleman. He was a member of United Methodist Church in Leesville, LA.
Murray Hicks III attended Paul Quinn College in Waco, Texas on a baseball scholarship
where he became a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. He graduated with
a Bachelor's degree and lived his dream of becoming a history teacher.
He spent his life spreading his love for history and his passion for education at schools
like Hornbeck High School in Louisiana for 20 years and retired at Dougherty
Comprehensive High School after only 14 years of teaching there. He was not only an
inspiring educator but he also devoted his time coaching basketball, softball and cross
country track at Hornbeck and baseball and assisted with football at Dougherty.
At Hornbeck High, he was the first coach in the school's history to ever take the
basketball team to the state's semi-finals. While teaching at Dougherty, he coached the
baseball team all the way to the playoffs. At that time, the baseball team had not been
to the playoffs in about 20 years. His love for sports and his dedication to his students
inspired everyone around him to do their best and be at their best.
Murray Hicks III was also a firefighter for the Cuthbert fire department. When he wasn't
inspiring his students, he was spending his time being an amazing husband and father.
He loved being surrounded by his family especially his grandchildren. He loved to hunt,
ride motorcycles and build model airplanes. He was a man of many talents.
Unfortunately, Murray Hicks III transitioned from Memorial Hospital in Savannah, GA on
March 17, 2026.
Cherished memories will forever remain with his beloved wife Cynthia Hicks, his
children Kiara Hicks (daughter) and Tomorrias Hicks (son); his loving nephew Darrell
Johnson (his sister's son); his son-in-law Robert Smith and his pride and joy
(grandchildren) Jayla Moreland, Murrissa Hicks and Tomorrias Hicks Jr.
