Mr. London
Simmons, Jr.
Nov 18, 1945 — Sep 5, 2026
London Simmons, Jr., a dedicated family man, a man of deep faith, and a proud military veteran, was born on November 18, 1945, in Harleyville, South Carolina. He was raised in Charleston, South Carolina.
London received his education through the Charleston County School District, where he served as a student bus driver. He graduated from Bonds-Wilson High School in 1965 and enlisted in the United States Army shortly thereafter. Utilizing his specialized expertise in machinery and accounting, London dedicated more than two decades to honorable military service before officially retiring in 1984.
Always a provider and a worker at heart, London's dedication continued long after his military career. He transitioned into Civil Service with the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (DFMWR), where he worked diligently from 1998 until 2019.
Brother Simmons was a faithful member of the Progressive Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ in Hinesville, Georgia, where he worshipped and served faithfully. He enjoyed eating good food, watching football-especially his favorite team, the New England Patriots-and FaceTiming with his family and friends. Known for his generous, caring, and loving heart, London poured kindness into the lives of everyone he met.
London was preceded in death by his parents, Lizzie Mae Caleb and Gounzlee Zeigler, and his sister, Virginia Zeigler Plowden (Mitchell). His cherished childhood friends included Jervey Smalls, Jr., Sam Hall, and Clarence Burgess.
London gained his wings on September 5, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, service, kindness, and enduring love. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 35 years, Debra Simmons of Hinesville, Georgia; his children, Vanessa Simmons of Charleston, South Carolina, and Tonja Jones, Chanua Simmons, and Joshua Simmons, all of Hinesville, Georgia; his siblings, Geneva Simmons of Charleston, South Carolina, and Rose Zeigler Williams (Lucious) of Columbia, South Carolina; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who loved him deeply.
London walked through this world with grace and an open heart. Although he will be tremendously missed, his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him, and the warmth of his spirit will remain with us always.
