Mother Maggie James Sumpter was born June 6, 1932, in Liberty County, Georgia to the late Deacon Frank and Mrs. Hester James. She departed this life on April 23, 2024. Mother Maggie Sumpter was one of ten children. She was married to the late Bishop James Sumpter on December 11, 1971. They raised one daughter, Joyce Sumpter, who preceded them in death.


Mother Maggie Sumpter moved to Brooklyn, New York in October 1952. She worked as a garment technician until she retired in 1984, after her daughter's passing, to take care of her grandchildren, Lawrence, Joann, and Lavette. Mother Maggie Sumpter moved back to Georgia in 1990 to enjoy her retired life. She enjoyed reading the Bible, daily devotions, and the daily bread. She also enjoyed completing crossword puzzles. She was also a member of the St. James prayer band.


Mother Maggie Sumpter received Christ at an early age under the tutelage of Bishop James Kelly in 1950. Upon her return to Georgia, she attended Trinity Holiness Church in Midway, Ga. She later joined St. James Community Church where she was a faithful member until her health began to fail. She also attended St. Luke Pentecostal Church in Brooklyn, New York.


Mother Maggie Sumpter was very humorous. Mother Maggie Sumpter was very classy as well. Mother Maggie Sumpter was a Woman of the Word, a Woman of Prayer, a Woman of Faith, and a Woman of Wisdom.



Mother Maggie Sumpter was preceded in death by her loving husband of 42 years, Bishop James Sumpter, a daughter, Joyce Sumpter, a granddaughter, Lavette Johnson, and a grandson, Lawrence Sumpter.



Mother Maggie Sumpter leaves to cherish precious memories to one granddaughter, Joann Lewis (Alvin), 6 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great-grandchildren, seven godchildren, Alberta Hines Anderson, Donna Shuman, Denise Savage, Mother Janie Jones, Larry Golden (Sheila), Cassandra Jones, and Alfreda Roberts (Henry), one sister-in-law, Rachel James of Midway, Ga, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.


Final and most sacred arrangements are entrusted to the professional care of The Dorchester Funeral Home, 7842 E. Oglethorpe HWY, Midway, GA.
