The Life of Deacon Louis Hendry

A Time to Be Born

Louis Hendry was born on November 29, 1939, to the late Alex and Eula Bee Hendry. He was raised by his aunt, Georgia Mae Daniels, in the Holmestown, Georgia, community. As a young child, he attended Wilderness Missionary Baptist Church with his family. As a teenager, Louis often cut hair for members of the community.

A Time to Be Educated

Louis received his education in the Liberty County Public School System and graduated from the old Liberty High School in 1959.

A Time to Be Progressive

At the age of 19, Louis moved to New York City in search of employment and a better life. He lived with his high school friend, Samuel Kelly, until his marriage. Louis was first employed by K & W Paper Products, Inc. He later began a distinguished career with the New York City Transit Authority, serving first as a car cleaner and later as a train conductor. He retired in 1995 after many years of faithful service and returned to Georgia with his beloved wife.

A Time to Love

On June 4, 1961, Louis Hendry married the love of his life, Rosetta Harley, in Brooklyn, New York. Their loving union was blessed with two sons, Edwin Louis Hendry and Rudy Verdell Hendry.

A Time to Rejoice and Serve

In 1960, Louis accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior in Brooklyn, New York, under the leadership of Elder Ernest Kelly. He united with Kelly's Temple Church of Christ Holiness unto the Lord, where he faithfully served as a deacon and later as Chairman of the Deacon Board under several pastors: Elder Ernest Kelly, Elder Willie Hazel, Elder Nathanial Kelly, and Elder Ed Wallace Thomas. In the late 1960s, he also sang with the "Get Together Boys," a gospel quartet.

After returning to Georgia in 1995, Louis and Rosetta united with Solomon Temple Church of Christ Holiness unto the Lord in Midway, Georgia. There he faithfully served as a deacon under Elder Roosevelt Ashley, Bishop Moses Lewis, Elder Horace Oliver, and the current pastor, Elder James Brown, Sr. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed National Deacon of The Church of Christ Holiness Unto the Lord, Inc. In 2000, he was appointed Chairman Deacon at Solomon Temple Church. He also faithfully served as Sunday School Superintendent, Executive Board member, National Finance Committee member, master devotional leader, member of the Solomon Temple Brotherhood Ministry, advisor and secretary of the Georgia State Brotherhood of The Church of Christ Holiness Unto the Lord.

As National Deacon, he devoted himself wholeheartedly to caring for the spiritual and emotional well-being of members throughout the denomination. He faithfully reached out by making phone calls, sending thoughtful cards, and offering words of encouragement to those who were sick, bereaved, discouraged, or brokenhearted.

He also traveled to visit the sick and grieving, sharing the love of Christ through heartfelt compassion and the comforting promises of God's Word. His unwavering kindness, servant's heart, and steadfast commitment to ministering to others brought hope, strength, and encouragement to countless lives, leaving an enduring legacy of Christian love and faithful service.

A Time to Die

On July 28, 2026, Deacon Louis Hendry peacefully departed this life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Eula Bee Hendry; his sister, Estella Roberts; his sisters-in-law, Vivian Delores Burke, Muriel Harley, Christine Yvonne Davis, and Daisy Marie Harley; his brothers-in-law, Billy James, Rudolph Henry Harley, and William A. Maddox; his nephews, Rodney E. Saunders and Donald F. James; and his niece, Judy P. Walthour Jean.

He leaves to cherish his memory his son and daughter-in-law, Edwin and Valerie Hendry; his son and companion, Rudy Hendry and Lori Tramble; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two devoted sisters, Laura Gibbs and Georgia Mae Walthour; one brother-in-law, Maurice Gibbs; his sisters-in-law, Faye Janice Harley-Saunders (Edward Rudolph Saunders), Anna Louise Harley-James, Vera Olivia Hines-Latte (Jack Thomas A. V. Latte), Susie Ann Harley, and Mary Ella Sandra Priscilla Maddox; his brother-in-law, Joseph Burke; his three godchildren, Janice Furrs, Pastor Errol (Evangelist Joan) Roach, and Aleah Scriven; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

In lieu of floral arrangements, the Hendry family respectfully requests that memorial contributions be made to the Solomon Temple COCHUTL Brotherhood in honor of their loved one.
