The Staff at Dorchester Funeral Home would like to extend our sincerest condolences to the family of Kermetta C. Shipman.
Dr. Kermetta C. Shipman of Midway, GA., transitioned to herheavenly home on Thursday, May 6, 2021. She was the oldest daughter of Kermit and Carrie Clark. She graduated from Evans County High School in 1961. She attended Savannah State College (University) for two years before she met and married Airman First Class James C. Shipman. After settling in Washington, DC they had three children: Jeretta, Bennett and Vivienne. Kermetta was still determined to continue her education. She graduated from the University of District Columbia with a BS in Elementary Education. Kermetta continued her education at Howard University Law School where she earned a Juris Doctorate. She also obtained a M.Ed in Information Technology from Georgia Southern University.
After graduating from Howard University Law School, Dr. Shipman worked as a law clerk on Capitol Hill. Additionally, she worked as an elementary school teacher and a mediaspecialist.
Kermetta was involved in several civic organizations. She was a member of Delta Sigma ThetaSorority, Inc., Top Ladies of Distinction, and a life member of the NAACP.Growing up, Kermetta was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Claxton, GA. She later joined East Washington Heights Baptist Church inWashington, DC, Calvary Baptist Church in Richmond Hill, GA and was the 1st Lady for27 years at Bolton StreetBaptist Church in Savannah, GA.
She was preceded in death by: her parents Kermit and Carrie Clark, her brother Charles Clark and her son Bennett Shipman.She leaves to mourn her passing: her husband of 58 years, Pastor Emeritus James C. Shipman, her two children Jeretta (Vann) Shipman Holland of Avenel, NJ and Dr. Vivienne (Gregory) Shipman Neal of Midway, GA. She lives on through her six grandchildren: Vann Holland III, Vania Holland, Vince Holland, Gregory Neal, Vivica Neal and Vivianna Kermetta Shipman; and two great grandchildren: Vann Holland IV and Mateo Neal. Three siblings: Roosevelt Clark of Claxton, GA, Thernell (LaVone) Clark of Atlanta, GA, and Jennifer Ford of Claxton, GA. She also leaves to mourn her passing a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and associates.In Lieu of flowers, please make donations to:James Shipman and Memo: Dr. Kermetta C.
