Gertrude H. Gardner was born on October 31, 1941 in Savannah, GA to the late Deacon George Holmes and Deaconess Romena James Holmes. Gertrude grew up in Riceboro, GA where she continued her education at Liberty County Training School, which is today Liberty County High School. She graduated Liberty County Training School in 1959. Soon after graduating High School, Gertrude entered Savannah State University and graduated with a degree in Elementary Education. Once completing her degree, Gertrude started teaching second grade in the Liberty County School System until she retired. She has taught, encouraged, inspired and ministered to many people, races and cultures during her 30 year career. She received the Liberty County Teacher of the Year award in 1989. Gertrude was a Deaconess at First Zion Baptist Church under Pastor Rev. B.N. Jones where she served faithfully in the Baptist Training Union and sang in the choir. She was also a member of the Eastern Star. Mother Gertrude H. Gardner later worshipped at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Temple under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Eddie C. Campbell, Sr., Pastor. On June 18, 1960, Gertrude Gardner married the love of her life the late Deacon Alexander Gardner, Jr. of Riceboro, GA. Gertrude and Alexander were married for 55 years. They were blessed with two sons. Gertrude Gardner was devoted wife, mother, grandmother, Deaconess, teacher and an amazing woman of God. She leaves to cherish her memories to two sons: Dennis (Lisa) Gardner of Macon, GA and Tyrone Gardner of Atlanta, GA; three grandchildren: Cameron, Andrew and Chelsea; one sister: Georgeann (Leroy) Lentz of Tampa, FL; two sister-in-laws: Barbara Holmes of Riceboro, GA, Bertha Holmes of Tampa, FL; two Goddaughters, Myra H. Walthour of Houston, TX, Deborah Williams of Walthourville, GA; and host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
