Obituary

Dorothy Pray McKever was born on April 15, 1927 in Allenhurst, Georgia to the late Julius and Sophia Jones Pray. The seventh of eight children born of the Pray/Jones union, Dot, as she is known to family and friends was an extremely loyal sister who lovingly cared for her siblings in their times of need. She was the last surviving child of Julius and Sophia and the always regal matriarch of the GA/PA Pray Family. Preceding her in death are two brothers, Julian Pray and Cecil Pray, and five sisters, Louise Pray Walthour, Grace Pray Wilder, Alexine Pray Martin, Thelma Pray and Lucille Pray. Dorothy was educated in the public schools of Liberty County, where she graduated from the Liberty County Training School. She later received a degree in Early Childhood Education from Savannah State College (University) and began her teaching career in Ocilla, Georgia and later honed her craft educating students in Riceboro, Georgia. Dorothy married Herman McKever and relocated to Philadelphia, PA where she continued to touch lives and mold young minds before retiring from the public school system after thirty-five years. At an early age Dorothy accepted Christ and was baptized at Baconton Missionary Baptist Church. She was active in Sunday School and developed a love for music while singing in the choir. She continued her spiritual walk as a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church in West Philadelphia. She served on various ministries in the church, but found the most joy with the Floral Guild, planning the Price is Right Activity and the Christmas Light Show. Dorothy was a founding member of the Liberty County Hi Fidelity Civic Club and she continued her good works as an active member in many social and civic clubs in Philadelphia. She was extremely generous with her time and talents; she took great pleasure in driving "senior citizens" to doctor appointments and to the grocery stores and she loved to cook and feed her family and friends. Kindness and caring for others gave Dot the most pleasure. Most obvious to everyone was Dorothy's love for shopping; she exuded beauty, and class and was known for her extraordinary taste in hats and custom, outfits. Her profound, presence will be missed, but her elegant blueprint will forever remain. She made broken look Beautiful and strong look Invincible. She walked with the universe on her shoulders and made it look like a pair of wings (unknown). She leaves to cherish her memories a huge extended family of nieces and nephews including Carl Martin (Andrewnette) and Cheryl Thomas (Kevin), who were more like her children, goddaughter Celestine Varnedoe-Jackson, cousins, and special friends including Spencer Lee.
