Obituary

Mattie Mae (Solomon) Jones of Riceboro, GA transitioned to her eternal heavenly home on April 10, 2024. She was the third eldest child of the late Roscoe Solomon and Trudie Hicks-Ware of Cairo, GA. Mattie accepted Christ at an early age. She became a devoted member of the First African Baptist Church in Riceboro, GA for 60+ years where she served as a devoted deaconess of the church. She attended elementary and middle schools in Georgia and Florida before moving to Liberty County in 1961 to wed her teenage sweetheart/husband, Charlie Jones Sr. The couple was married for sixty-one (61) years.

Mattie was a calm-spirited person who left a positive impression on everyone she encountered. She comforted the souls of many and helped to fill and uplift the spirits of others with her bright smile, open arms, and gentleness which allowed people to always feel at ease. She possessed a gift of patience and the ability to listen to others without being judgemental and helping to find solutions to problems that many did not want to face alone. She had a love of flowers and cooking her "soul food" recipes such as crab quiche, carrot cake, fruit cake, greens, and salsberry steak with gravy which family and friends cherished all year long.

Mattie was involved in social and civic functions including serving as a member of the Limerick Chapter #336 Order of the Eastern Star (O.E.S) as well as working for the Liberty County Department of Family and Children Services as a homemaker fortwenty-two years. One of the highlights of her career was being recognized as the Non-Social Worker of the Year for the State of Georgia. In 1994, because of her failing health, she decided on an early retirement. This decision led her to her most rewarding roles in life as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.

Mattie is preceded in death by her daughter, Barbara Patterson, five (5) siblings, Hollie Solomon, Alma Jackson, Shirley Glasco, Johnnie Ware, and Terry Ware; brothers-in-law, Henry Jones, Bobby Jones, Jimmie T. Jones, Sr., Sam Jones, and Charles Clark; and sisters-in-law, Estella Clark, Tena Morris, and Vernell Jones.

She leaves to cherish her memories and carry on the legacy of her devoted husband, Charlie L. Jones Sr. of Riceboro, GA; sons Charlie (Regina) Jones Jr. of Allenhurst, GA and Henry (Karla) Jones of Chicago, IL; daughter Gwendolyn (Carl) Martin of Savannah, GA; granddaughters, Jessica (Brian) Hamrick of Conyers, GA and Veronica (Larry) Wiggs of Hinesville, GA, Ava Jones of Chicago, IL; grandsons Trey (Jinetra) Searles of Hinesville, GA, Malcolm Parrish (Myesha) of Dallas, TX, and Ryan Jones of Chicago, IL; eleven (11) great-grandchildren and one great great grandson; siblings Mary Palmer of Jacksonville, FL, Evelyn Landers of Tallahassee, FL, and Robert Ware of Cairo, GA; brothers-in-law, Randolph (Geneva), Jones Sr. John (Cecila), Jones Sr. and Joe Neal Morris Sr. of Riceboro, GA; sisters-in-law Victoria Jones of Riceboro, GA; Nevie Holmes of Allenhurst, GA; Adela Jones of Glennville, GA; son-in-law, Dexter Patterson of Hinesville, GA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Rest in peace, Mattie; you are forever in our hearts.
